More Worm Bin News

Just a quick update... And it's good news! There have been no more fruit flies out of the worm bin. So perhaps it would be safe to stick with freezing the scraps before adding them to the bin. I still haven't decided what to do about adding leaves to the bin. To bake or not to bake? What if I put them in after taking something else out, to use the residual heat? I am pretty sure nuking the leaves would be a bad idea. I am probably putting far too much thought into this question. But, you know, the idea of a winter sharing the house with bugs is just sooo unpleasant.

Hi there, thanks for the comment on my blog. Brinjal is aubergine, not very exotic, lol. But I have to ask, what is a worm bin?

Hi! Brinjal=Aubergine. Got it! We call them eggplants here. But aubergine has a much more respectable ring to it; and brinjal sounds so much more exotic than "eggplant".

The worm bin is just a plastic bin full of "red wiggler" worms (Eisenia foetida) that we use to recycle/quick-compost food scraps (mostly fruit/vegetable/coffee grinds/etc) instead of throwing them in the trash or hauling them out to the compost bin at the end of the yard.

Well, I was going to suggest nuking the leaves...but you're thinking they will fry in there? What about freezing them then?

I'm very happy for you that there are no more fruit flies at the moment. We had a compost bucket in the break room where I used to work, and I would literally gag when I went in there because of the proliferation of fruit flies. So gross.

Good luck with the leaves whatever you decide!

Well, I just have visions of the leaves bursting into flame in my microwave. That would be bad. Kinda funny. But bad. The older I get the less I want to have to explain things like that.
"So tell me again, ma'am, why you are replacing your microwave..."

Oh, the leaves caught on fire.

"The leaves?"

Yeah, from the yard...

"Uh huh, and why were you nuking leaves from the yard?"

Well, to try to prevent fruit flies and other bugs from taking over my house...

~No, I do not see that ending well~
